Adapted from the Marvel Comics character Deadpool, Deadpool 3 is an upcoming superhero movie in the United States that was made by Marvel Studios and Maximum Effort and is being released by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. It is planned to be both a sequel to Deadpool (2016) and Deadpool 2 (2018) and the 34th installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Shawn Levy is directing the movie, with Rhett Reese, Paul Wernick, Zeb Wells, Ryan Reynolds, and Levy contributing to the script. Along with Hugh Jackman, Morena Baccarin, Brianna Hildebrand, and Jennifer Garner, Reynolds portrays Wade Wilson/Deadpool in the film.

The creation of a third Deadpool movie has already begun at 20th Century Fox by November 2016, but it was shelved once the studio was acquired by Disney in March 2019. Marvel Studios was then awarded control of the character, and together with Reynolds, they started working on a new movie. The first MCU movie to have an R-rating, it includes Deadpool into the MCU and is anticipated to keep that classification. The script was initially written by Wendy Molyneux and Lizzie Molyneux-Logelin, who joined the project in November 2020. By March 2022, Reese and Wernick, who had previously worked on the project, had revised it. Then, Levy was selected to serve as the director. In August 2022, Jackman made the decision to reprise his role as Wolverine from the X-Men movies. Additional casting would come in early 2023. In May of that year, filming commenced in Norfolk as well as in London and at Pinewood Studios in Buckinghamshire, England. The 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike forced the suspension of filming in July, which was scheduled to take place in Vancouver, Canada.

Release Date

Phase Five of the MCU will include the release of Deadpool 3 in the United States on May 3, 2024.
On May 3, 2024, Deadpool 3 is slated for release in the United States. It had earlier been set for September 6 and November 8 of that year. It will be a part of the MCU's fifth phase.

Music

By the middle of July 2023, Levy had hired Rob Simonsen, who had previously collaborated with him on The Adam Project and the fourth season of Stranger Things, to write the soundtrack for the movie.

Cast

Ryan Reynolds plays Wade Wilson/Deadpool, a witty mercenary who underwent an experimental regenerative mutation to treat terminal cancer and now has fast healing but terrible scarring all over his body. For Deadpool, who is a deranged person thrust into the "very sane world" of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), the movie is a fish out of water story, according to writer Rhett Reese.

Hugh Jackman plays James "Logan" Howlett, aka Wolverine, a mutant with adamantium-infused bones, retractable claws, and healing powers. Logan would become frustrated by the "quarreling dynamic" between Deadpool and Logan, according to Jackman. Jackman started a rigorous gym regimen and calorie-dense diet in order to become in shape for the part.

Brianna Hildebrand as Negasonic Teenage Warhead
Morena Baccarin as Vanessa
Jennifer Garner as Elektra Natchios

About

Following the 2016 hit Deadpool, 20th Century Fox started working on two sequels. The superhero group X-Force was supposed to appear in the third movie. Due to creative disputes with star Ryan Reynolds, Deadpool director Tim Miller decided not to return for the follow-ups, and David Leitch was chosen to helm Deadpool 2 (2018) in November 2016. Fox was looking for a different director to create the third movie. Rhett Reese, the co-writer of Deadpool and Deadpool 2, indicated in March 2017 that X-Force will first appear in Deadpool 2 before appearing in a spin-off movie that would start "something bigger," independent of the third Deadpool movie, which would be more intimate.

The Walt Disney Company CEO Bob Iger stated that Deadpool would be integrated with the PG-13 rated Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) and that Disney was willing to make R-rated Deadpool films "as long as we let the audiences know what's coming" when the acquisition of 21st Century Fox by Disney was announced in December 2017. He went on to say that for characters like Deadpool, a "Marvel-R brand" might be created. Given the franchise's shift in focus to X-Force, Reynolds stated in May 2018 that a third Deadpool movie might not be produced. However, Reese and his writing partner Paul Wernick believed a third movie would undoubtedly be produced after Reynolds took a break from the character and the X-Force movie was released. They compared it to The Avengers (2012), a crossover movie that was released in between Iron Man 2 (2010) and Iron Man 3 (2013). Leitch showed interest in coming back for a second Deadpool movie, subject to "time and place". By August 2018, it was rumored that a third Deadpool movie was in the early stages of development, with Atlanta, Georgia, rather than Vancouver, British Columbia, as the location for filming. At the end of the year, a PG-13 version of Deadpool 2 called Once Upon a Deadpool was published. Disney and Marvel Studios closely followed it to see how it would influence how they would treat the character in the PG-13 Marvel Cinematic Universe. Reynolds revealed that the third Deadpool movie was originally going to be a road trip movie in the vein of Rashomon (1950), starring Hugh Jackman's X-Men character James "Logan" Howlett / Wolverine, when he was promoting Once Upon a Deadpool. Reynolds said the third Deadpool movie would take a "completely different direction" while it was in development. Despite formally retiring from the role of Wolverine at the time, Jackman had himself imagined a team-up movie with Reynolds inspired by 48 Hrs. (1982) while watching a screening of Deadpool in 2016. Disney acquired the film rights to various Marvel Comics characters, including Deadpool and the X-Men, for Marvel Studios when it formally acquired Fox in March 2019. Fox put "on hold" the movies it had been working on based on Marvel.

After portraying Cable in Deadpool 2, Josh Brolin disclosed in June 2019 that he had multiple conversations with Marvel Studios about the character's future. In the MCU, Brolin also played Thanos. Zazie Beetz declared in October that she would be shocked if she did not reprise her role as Domino from Deadpool 2 in a later movie. Reese, Wernick, and Reynolds claimed they and Reynolds were taking a "much needed rest from Deadpool" during that month while they awaited word from Marvel Studios regarding the franchise's future. They affirmed that there will be a second Deadpool movie, that it would be rated R like the first two, and that it would include the character into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Between their exhaustion after finishing Deadpool 2 and the news of Fox's acquisition by Disney, according to Wernick, there was never a predetermined pitch for a third Deadpool movie. Reese added that they now had to "land on the right idea and once we do, I think we'll be off to the races." As opposed to their limited possibilities among the characters that Fox had control over for the preceding films, the writers felt that there would be more individuals accessible in the MCU to act as Deadpool's antagonists. Reynolds disclosed that he had a meeting with Marvel Studios at that time.  Reynolds announced in December that he and "the whole team" were working on a Deadpool movie at Marvel Studios. Reynolds pleaded with Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige during his discussions with the company, but he was informed that this would not be feasible.

Reynolds and Marvel Studios spoke with possible screenwriters for the upcoming Deadpool movie throughout October 2020. Wendy Molyneux and Lizzie Molyneux-Logelin were hired to write the screenplay in November. The writers' proposal was deemed acceptable by Reynolds and Marvel Studios because it matched their own goals for the movie, which would maintain its R rating. Leitch was not expected to because of other commitments during 2021, and he was not engaged in the choosing of the writers, although Reynolds and Marvel Studios were open to his coming back for the movie. Leitch said that he had met with Marvel about the movie, but they both knew that other commitments and scheduling conflicts would preclude him from going back. Feige reiterated in January 2021 that the movie would be rated R and take place in the MCU. Feige stated that because of Reynolds' hectic schedule, filming would not start until after 2021 while Reynolds was overseeing the screenplay process at the moment. He claimed that Deadpool was a very unique kind of character for the MCU. In a commercial for the movie named Deadpool and Korg React, Reynolds and Taika Waititi marketed their movie Free Guy (2021) by portraying Deadpool and Waititi's MCU character Korg, respectively. In the advertisement, Deadpool breaks the fourth wall and talks to Korg about joining the MCU. Reynolds predicted that filming would start in 2022 the following month, and Feige quickly concurred. He said that Marvel Studios has set a date for the movie's release. Beetz ultimately decided not to reprise her roles as Domino and Peter from Deadpool 2, despite having indicated interest in doing so in November together with Rob Delaney. At that time, according to Reynolds, they were "plugging away" on the movie.

In March 2022, it was made public that Shawn Levy, who has previously worked with Reynolds on The Adam Project and Free Guy, would be helming the movie. The start of filming, according to Levy, won't happen until after 2022 because of his busy schedule for the rest of the year. At the same time, Reese and Wernick were engaged to rework the script, and Reynolds announced that his production company Maximum Effort would co-produce the movie. Given the popularity of the previous films, the writers claimed in June that Disney and Marvel were supportive of the humor they were creating for Deadpool that referenced the MCU. They expressed excitement about using elements of the MCU as a backdrop for the movie. They refused to say whether they were writing the script from fresh or simply revising the Molyneux sisters' original draft because doing so may reveal narrative points. Raymond Chan, who had previously worked on the Disney+ MCU television series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier (2021), was announced to be the production designer in June as well. As with earlier third films in the MCU franchise, including as Captain America: Civil War (2016), Thor: Ragnarok (2017), and Avengers: Infinity War (2018), Feige claimed in July that the movie would improve upon the first two. He continued by saying that working with Reynolds was enjoyable.

Under the working title Tidal Wave, principal photography commenced on May 22, 2023 in London and at Pinewood Studios in Buckinghamshire, England. The film's cinematographer, George Richmond, previously collaborated with Levy and Reynolds on Free Guy. Prior to this, it was anticipated that filming would start in January 2023 and end around April 2023. Other than Reynolds being unable to contribute to the script while it was being filmed, as he had done during the previous two movies, in accordance with the strike guidelines, it was not anticipated that the 2023 Writers Guild of America strike that started in early May would have any effects on it. According to reports, Marvel Studios intended to capture as much as they could during primary production and alter the script as needed during the movie's already scheduled reshoots. Levy knew that the Deadpool 3 schedule would conflict with the production of Stranger Things before the latter was postponed due to the writers' strike, so he worked with Marvel Studios and the show's creators to allow him to direct at least one episode of the final season of that Netflix series (on which Levy serves as an executive producer).

The movie's release date was accelerated in June to May 3, 2024. Early in July 2023, a car crash scene was filmed on location in London. Soon after, it was made public that Jennifer Garner, who had previously played Elektra in the Fox-produced movies Elektra (2005) and Daredevil (2003), would be playing the role in the movie. Prior to July 14th, when shooting was halted due to the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike, filming with Reynolds and Jackman also took place in Norfolk. Prior to the suspension, filming was halfway finished; it will restart once the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes are over. To make it feel grounded and authentic, the production team chose to film on site rather than on a studio. Levy stated that while some of the movie's casting rumors were accurate, others weren't. Vancouver was also supposed to be used for filming.
