Joker: Folie à Deux 2024

Joker: Folie à Deux is an upcoming American thriller movie directed by Todd Phillips. The movie, which is a 2019 follow-up to Joker, features Joaquin Phoenix in the title role of the Joker and Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn. Both characters are based on DC Comics characters.

Zazie Beetz also plays the same part she did in the first movie. In collaboration with Village Roadshow Pictures, Bron Creative, and Joint Effort, Warner Bros. Pictures and DC Studios are producing it. From December 2022 until April 2023, principal photography was conducted at Cedar Grove, New Jersey, and Los Angeles, New York.

Joker: Warner Bros. Pictures plans to distribute Folie à Deux in the United States on October 4, 2024.

About

Joker (2019) was supposed to be a stand-alone movie with no follow-ups, but Warner Bros. intended it to be the beginning of DC Black, a line of DC Comics-based films with darker, more avant-garde themes that will be released independently of the DC Extended Universe and distributed by the DC Black Label comic book publisher.

While director Todd Phillips said in August 2019 that he would be willing to helm a sequel if Phoenix expressed interest and the film did well, he later clarified that the film is not meant to be a continuation. It has always been shown as a single, stand-alone movie.

In October 2019, Phoenix discussed the possibility of playing Arthur again in an interview with journalist and Rolling Stone film critic Peter Travers. The conversation revolved around Travers' question about whether Phoenix thought of Joker as his "dream role."

Phoenix said, "It's nothing that I really wanted to do prior to working on this movie," adding, "I can't stop thinking about it if there's something else we can do with Joker that might be interesting." $20 million was given to him for his participation.

The Hollywood Reporter revealed in November of 2019 that a sequel starring Phoenix, Silver, and Phillips was in development. The Reporters of Hollywood story was untrue, according to Deadline Hollywood, which also stated that negotiations had not even started. In response to the rumors, Phillips stated that while a sequel was still possible and had been discussed with Warner Bros., it was not currently being developed. Additionally, Phillips stated that Joker continuity would not apply to The Batman 2022.

On December 10, 2022, principal photography got underway. Cinematographer Lawrence Sher and director Jordan Phillips shared an advance glimpse of the film on their respective Instagram accounts. Sher had mentioned Francis Ford Coppola's 1982 film One From the Heart as an inspiration for the picture. By March 2023, exterior filming had taken place in New York and Los Angeles.

Some in the vicinity mistakenly believed that Lady Gaga had arrested Donald Trump after his first indictment because she had filmed scenes outside the New York County Courthouse with a group of extras demanding Joker's arrest.

The closed Essex County Hospital in New Jersey served as the filming location for scenes from Arkham Asylum. Filming was done in April 2023 at the Joker Stairs, which are the stairs on West 167th street in the Bronx that were a major feature of the first movie. On April 5, 2023, filming came to an official end.

Music

Returning from the first film, Hildur Guðnadóttir wrote the musical score for the second, which will have musical components.

Joaquin Phoenix as Joker - A mentally sick, destitute former stand-up comedian and party clown who was shunned by society and whose past of psychological and physical abuse turned him into a nihilistic criminal with a clown persona.

Lady Gaga as Dr. Harley Quinn - Assigned to treat Arthur, the psychiatrist's curiosity eventually becomes an obsession, leading to the formation of a lethal romantic relationship between her and Arthur. Sophie Dumond, played by Zazie Beetz: Arthur's former neighbor, a single mother.
