It was announced in January 2021 that King would helm the movie, which was renamed Wonka. Timothée Chalamet was cast in the lead role in May, and it was revealed that the movie would have multiple musical sequences. He was the director's first and only choice for the part, saying that after viewing the actor's high school YouTube performances, which demonstrated his dancing and singing abilities, he offered him the part without requiring an audition. Chalamet received a $9 million payment for his contribution. It was also announced that Simon Farnaby, who worked on Paddington 2 with him, co-wrote the screenplay for the movie.

Additional literary contributions came from Jeff Nathanson, Simon Rich, and Simon Stephenson. Prior to Chalamet being chosen for the part, Tom Holland was also a strong contender.
